I always love a good red velvet cake, and with Valentine's Day tomorrow, it's the perfect time to bake one.
Most red velvet cake recipes require a large amount of artificial red food coloring in order to achieve the appetizing red color. Although it may taste fine to you, these artificial food colorings are extremely harmful to your health, and especially your children's health. According to the CSPI, many of them contain carcinogens, and pose risks of cancer, hyperactivity in children, and allergies. The FDA has even acknowledged that these artificial colorings are known carcinogens, but they are still present in the food supply. Why take a chance on your family's health??
An excellent alternative is red beet root powder. Not only will you get the red color for your red velvet cake, but it provides a wealth of health benefits too. Beet roots are rich in potassium, phosphorus, iron, magnesium and calcium as well as vitamin A, B and C. It helps to cleanse the blood and normalize it's pH balance. They are also a unique source of phytonutrients, which provide antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, and detoxification support.
Here is a great recipe for red velvet cake which utilizes the red beet root powder for it's amazing red color.
